What’s the THRIVE Study?

The overall purpose is to learn about how the environment affects how kids think, feel and grow! Most importantly, we want to know:
How does the brain help kids adapt to their environment?

General Overview of the Study 

Part One: Lab visit

What will I be asked to do?

  • Informed consent

  • Computer games (child)

  • Questionnaires

  • Interview

  • See UMD Campus!

Duration:

  • 3 hours

Compensation:

  • $75 (child) and $75 (caregiver)

  • UMD swag item

  • Personalized feedback reports

Part Two: Optional MRI scan

What will I be asked to do?

  • Informed consent
  • MRI Safety Screening Form
  • MRI scanning practice session
  • 1-hour MRI scan (child)

Duration:

  • 2.5 hours

Compensation:

  • $63 – $83 (child) and $63 (caregiver)
  • 3D print of your brain (child)
  • Personalized educational report (child)
  • All of your MRI images (child)
Part Three: Virtual follow-ups

 What will I be asked to do?

  • 3 follow-ups within 1 year 
  • Computer games (child)
  • Survey (caregiver)

Duration:

  • 30 minutes x 3 (child)
  • 15 minutes x 3 (caregiver)

Compensation:

  • $45 (child) and $30 (caregiver)

After your participation of the MRI scan, you will receive a 3D-Print of your brain with a color of your choosing!

Who can join the study?

Adult caregiver

You must be the adult caregiver of the child you wish to have participate in the THRIVE study.

 

Age restriction

The child participant must be between ages 9 to 11 years old with an adult caregiver who can participate with them.

Location

The child participant must live or go to school in Wards 4 or 5 of DC.

Language

The child participant must be able to read, write and understand English. The caregiver can speak English or Spanish!

School

The child participant must be enrolled in school.

Visit the University of Maryland (UMD)

Participants should be willing to travel to UMD.

    *Note: We will provide and pay for transportation.

Vision & Hearing

The child participant should have normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing.

Internet Connection

Participants must have access to an internet connection to complete virtual follow-ups
