Community Outreach Events
Growing with the GARD Lab
Growing with the GARD Lab is a STEM outreach program designed to help broaden youth engagement with science through fun activities including brain trivia, games, outdoor exercises, and group conversations.
Special thanks to the YMCA for helping us put this together! We are now looking for additional school partners to expand this program!
Our Neighborhoods, Our Stories: Community Art Mural
This community art mural was part of the “Our Neighborhood, Our Stories” arts workshops series dedicated to amplifying resident voices through art, conversation, and reflection. Pieces focused on exploring the meaning of community through the creation of personalized art tiles that were joined together to create a collective mural.
Special thanks to DCPL Woodridge Branch (Librarian Mr. Eric White), ANC 5B04 Commissioner Mr. Ra Amin, Greater Brookland Intergenerational Village leaders Laura Worby and Magda Leon & Tim Kime for working with us to put this series together. We are excited for what is to come!
STEM Centered
STEM outreach programs dedicated to inspire and engage youth through group discussions and hands-on activities such as:
- Neurotrivia to test your knowledge & win fun prizes!
- Stroop test demonstrating the delay in reaction between naming the color of a word that matches (BLUE) and naming the color when the word doesn’t match (BLUE)
- Brain hats to learn about the different parts of the brain
Greenspace
We love working with City Blossoms, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and the GARD Lab was organized to build community relationships and positive impact green space in the community!
Family Science Engagement
Our most recent event was a data walk, an engaging way to explore community issues through data, held at the Woodridge Public Library in DC. The data walk showcased results from all parts of the CARE Project, including interviews and a household survey in Wards 4 and 5, a youth STEM internship program, and our new project on teen neurodevelopment!
Volunteering in the community
Over the years, the GARD Lab has joined alongside our community members to support and build stronger communities, such as volunteering in food drives.
